This Sky Blue Diamond Could Go Sky High!

This blue beauty will be the centerpiece of Sotheby's November auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva.  The mesmerizing 8.01 carat blue diamond, named the Sky Blue Diamond, has a pre-auction estimate of $15 to $25 million!

The fancy vivid blue diamond, the highest possible color grade for a blue diamond, is described by David Bennett, the worldwide chairman of Sotheby's International Jewelry Division, as "a wonderfully clear celestial blue.  The diamond is mounted in a ring by Cartier.

When a diamond has color, it is due to impurities mixed in with the carbon or defects in the crystal structure.  In blue diamonds, the color comes from boron trapped in the crystal's structure.  They're rare, with only about one in 200,000 diamonds showing a bit of blue and far fewer displaying a deep color.

In recent years blue diamonds have taken center stage at auctions.  Within the past two years alone, Sotheby's has twice set a new world auction price for a blue diamond.  Most recently, the only diamond or gemstone in auction history to exceed $4 million per carat, the Blue Moon of Josephine, shown to the right, sold for $48.5 million in November 2015.

If the Sky Blue Diamond meets or exceeds its high estimate it will join the ranks of the most expensive blue diamonds ever sold at auction.
