This rare 1.56 fancy red diamond, named the Argyle Phoenix, is the largest red diamond ever to come out of the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia. In the mine's thirty year history, only six fancy red diamonds have come out of the mine which is known for producing 90% of the world's pink diamonds. Those whose color achieve red certification are the ultimate rarities.
This year, the Argyle Phoenix will be up for sale along with two other red diamonds in the Argyle's Annual Tender. There have never been three red stones to come out of the mine in one year and mine authorities say it is highly unlikely that it will ever happen again. Such diamonds can bring over $1 million per carat.
